Her body started all the weird things it did when she was being immature—sweating and aching in odd places but she needed to know what was going on and she needed to hear it from him.

Finally, she held her breath and pressed the blue arrow, sending the message out into the abyss of Daddy’s universe.

She didn’t sit there and wait on his reply like some needy lame chick. Instead, she tossed her phone into the passenger seat, cranked up her car, and drove out of the parking lot. Two blocks away from the dive bar, she started talking to herself again.

“You’re pining, Venus,” she muttered, turning down a dark street. “He’s out doing whatever it is dudes his age do—hanging out, fuckin’ Mikayla, waiting tables, hustling rappers⁠—”

Ding.

Her foot jerked, and she pulled into a Publix parking lot.

There was nothing so profound he could text that she needed to read at that moment, but he had her brain convinced that he always needed her undivided attention.

She double parked and snatched the phone from the passenger seat even though it could’ve been Ginny again. In fact, there was a tiny part of her brain that needed it to be Ginny so she could rant and rave to herself about Anthony Nunez being a ghoster.

She turned the phone over.
